New advance in the project to deepen the navigation channel

The Port Authority tenders the geotechnical campaign necessary for the drafting of the project

The project to deepen the navigation channel of the Port of the Bay of Cadiz continues advancing with the publication, yesterday, of the tender for geotechnical research, necessary for the drafting of the project.

The Port Authority of the Bay of Cadiz, as part of its Strategic Plan and in order to attend to the draught needs caused by the traffic foreseen in its different docks -with increasingly larger vessels-, has proposed the execution of a deepening dredging of the entrance channel to the port.

The dredging project to deepen the navigation channel of the Bay of Cadiz port is currently being drafted and in order to be able to make progress in this project and, specifically, to define the geotechnical parameters of the channel with greater certainty, as well as to adjust the results of the “Geophysical research to deepen the navigation channel of the Bay of Cadiz Port”, which is currently being carried out, it is necessary to carry out several tests. These tests will also be used to characterize the land used as landfills as well as the closing structures of the same.

For the definition of the geotechnical campaign, the Geotechnical Laboratory of the Centre for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works (CEDEX) and the designer of the deepening dredging of the navigation channel were used.

The campaign consists of the execution of 16 maritime soundings on a floating platform equipped with spuds for its fixation to the bottom that will reach the maximum level – 61.50, on these soundings numerous tests will be made: SPT, Pressure gauge, Vane Test, taking of unaltered samples,… In addition the maritime campaign has 16 CPTU´s and 10 dynamic penetrometers. The campaign is complemented by 5 surveys and 7 CPTU´s on land.
