The Port Authority will invest 700,000 euros in improving the fishing facilities in Cadiz

The Bay of Cadiz Port Authority plans to invest 712,300 euros in adapting the fishing facilities of the Port of Cadiz to implement energy efficiency, safety and measures to improve traceability and competitiveness.

The project has benefited from a grant from the European Maritime Fisheries Fund (FEMP) amounting to 536,240 euros.

The Cadiz fish market, together with the rest of the installations in the capital’s fishing dock, forms a powerful infrastructure in which an annual average of 10,000 tonnes of fish products are handled. Next to the fishing area of El Puerto de Santa Maria, it is the fourth fresh fishing port in the country.

The Cadiz fish market dates from the beginning of the 90’s of the last century and is made up of the 165 metre long fish market quay, the 7 metre wide manoeuvring area, the fish market itself with an area of 5,960 square metres and the exporters’ patio, which has a loading and unloading quay for goods onto lorries.

According to the latest study carried out by the University of Cadiz, the economic impact generated by the sector amounts to 1,158 jobs, including direct, indirect and induced jobs, which generate 17.6 million euros in wages and salaries and sales worth 72.6 million euros.

This impact, together with the intensity of use of the facilities and the technical and technological evolution of the sector, have led the Port Authority to invest in the adaptation of the facilities in three areas:

    1. Measures to improve traceability, through the installation of handling tables for fish markets, limiting the exposure time of fish boxes on the floor; installation of new video surveillance cameras and new points of information for the buyer and acquisition of pallets for unloading deep-sea fishing, among other measures.

    2. Measures to improve safety and working conditions: Installing new LED lighting points in the exporters’ yard reducing the risk of accidents and adapting the non-slip surface of the manoeuvring area and the exporters’ yard parking area to reduce the risk.

    3. Energy efficiency measures: By changing luminaires to the LED system
